Hanging curtain country valances adds special touch to a single room or a whole house. A decorative border for a traditional home offers an attractive frame for a window. Borders are hung on top of the window in a separate bar from the curtains of the windows or blinds. The curtain rod helps determine where to place the valances. A valance can cover the top of a curtain or blind, or independently above a window for a custom window treatment.
Measure the width of the window using a tape measure. Divide the number in a medium to determine where the center of the window is and mark the wall over the window lightly with a pencil. Use the tape measure to find the center of the country valances bar by stretching it end to end. Mark the center of the rod lightly with a pencil.

Find the height of the decorative part that is above the housing of the rod, called the head. Some headers are larger than others, but if it is small in your valance, make the necessary adjustments. Measure down from the ceiling or the wall of the curtain rod adjustment. This gives you the highest point where the country valances can be mounted. If there is no header on your valance, the rod is not limited as to where it can be mounted.
